Las Palmas

The biggest attraction of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is its beaches, particularly Playa de las Canteras.

Las Palmas is Gran Canaria's main city, and probably the most cosmopolitan city in the Canary Islands, it is the ninth largest city of Spain. It is situated on the northeast tip of the island, and offers everything of a big city: museums, squares, parks, theater etc. Las Palmas is surrounded by two large beaches; Las Caletas to the north, and the Alcaravaneras to the south. The city has an impressive infrastructure of hotels and apartments and its harbor Puerto de La Luz is one of the most important in all Europe.

Throughout history, Las Palmas received waves of immigrants from mainland Spain and countries from every continent. The majority of the population is Spanish, although there are large North and Sub-Sahara African and Latin American communities, as well as important historical minorities such as Indians (Sindhi) and Koreans and a growing population of Chinese. Ethnically, most Canarians are descendents of a mixture of Guanches (aboriginal people of the Canary Islands now extinct) and the Spanish colonizers and European (Portuguese, Italian, Irish, Flemish, German) conquistadors.

The majority of historic and cultural monuments are located in the oldest district of Las Palmas – Vegueta, among these are: the famous square Plaza de Santa Ana, the huge impressive cathedral Catedral de Santa Ana, and a house in which Christopher Columbus once stayed, today it is a museum dedicated to him. At the opposite side of Barranco de Guiniguada is the second historic district of the city - Triana, which presents perfect examples of Canarian architecture from 17th until 19th century. Across its central part leads paved, walking commercial promenade (C/ Triana), along which shops and cafes are placed.
